Biography
Born in Albi and originally trained as a flutist and cellist, Gabrielle Philiponet turned to lyric singing under the guidance of Daniel Ottevaere before completing her training at the Opera Studio of the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth. A laureate of numerous international competitions, including the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, she has gone on to build an international career spanning the French and Italian repertoire — from Mozart to Verdi, Puccini to Gounod, and the French opéra-comique tradition of Offenbach.
Her voice has evolved steadily toward heavier, more dramatic repertoire over the course of her career, moving from soubrette roles such as Susanna and Despina toward Verdi's Desdemona, Alice Ford, and Violetta, and — most recently — the title role of Charpentier's Louise. She has performed on the stages of the Paris Opera, the Opéra de Lyon, the Bayerische Staatsoper, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, and numerous French regional houses, working with conductors including Louis Langrée, Kent Nagano, Emmanuelle Haïm, and Pablo Heras-Casado, and directors such as Christof Loy, Denis Podalydès, Calixto Bieito, and Dimitri Tcherniakov.
Alongside her performing career, she is active as a voice teacher, competition jury member, and vocal coach — passing on her experience to a new generation of singers.

More about
Gabrielle Philiponet trained under Daniel Ottevaere at the Conservatoire de Valenciennes, where she received the unanimous Gold Medal. Then she joined the Opera Studio of the Queen Elisabeth Chapel Music in Belgium, where she worked guided by José Van Dam for voice and Helmut Deutsch for lieder. This dual formation, spanning the Franco-Belgian lyric tradition and the demands of the German art-song repertoire, shaped a voice that is both supple and far-reaching, equally at home in grand Italian opera and French mélodie.
Gabrielle Philiponet has built a remarkably diverse repertoire: Donna Anna and Fiordiligi in Mozart, Violetta and Desdemona in Verdi, Mimì and Musetta in Puccini, Marguerite and Mireille in Gounod, alongside French opéra-comique with Offenbach and rediscoveries of the French lyric heritage championed by the Palazzetto Bru Zane — Félicien David, Méhul, Joncières, Catel.
Her career has taken her to the stages of the Paris Opera, the Opéra de Lyon, the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, and the opera houses of Lille, Strasbourg, Rouen, Nancy, Metz, Nice, Toulon, Massy, Avignon, and Saint-Étienne, as well as internationally: Wexford Festival Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Müpa Budapest, and the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari.
She has had the privilege of working with conductors such as Emmanuelle Haïm, Kent Nagano, Louis Langrée, Pablo Heras-Casado, and Alain Altinoglu, and with some of the most sought-after directors on the opera scene today: Laurent Pelly, Christof Loy, Denis Podalydès, Calixto Bieito, Dimitri Tcherniakov, and Éric Ruf. The 2026 season brings her the title role of Louise at the Opéra de Lyon, followed by Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges.
Her curiosity for rare repertoire is reflected in her discography, praised by international critics. Gabrielle Philiponet has recorded Rameau's Le Temple de la Gloire with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra under Nicholas McGegan, as well as several rediscoveries of the French Romantic repertoire for the Palazzetto Bru Zane and Glossa Music, under conductors such as Hervé Niquet and György Vashegyi — including Joncières' Dimitri, Méhul's Adrien, and Catel's Sémiramis.
Since 2008, Gabrielle Philiponet has privately coached young singers and professionals in preparing for competitions, auditions, and role study. Regularly invited to sit on international competition juries and conservatory examination panels since 2015, she has also been a vocal coach at the Escales Lyriques de l'Île d'Yeu and has taught at several masterclasses organized by the Union des Artistes Belges.
