Reviews

OperaWire - Alan Neilson

In the title role was the French soprano Gabrielle Philiponet, who impressed with her
tonal beauty as well as with the elegance and grace with which she was able to enunciate
her lines, which, of course, was helped by singing in her native language. Although shegave the appearance of being demure, chaste and refined, she was no shrinking violet. In
fact, she was quite feisty and determined, even prepared to wield a sword in her own defense if need be, which she supported with intelligent phrasing furnished with pleasing
dynamic and emotional accents. She also demonstrated her sensitivity and skill in crafting gently moulded lines of exquisite beauty in the well-known aria “Sous le feuillage sombre.”

Opera Today

In the title role, the French soprano Gabrielle Philiponet captured the princess’s independent streak as well as her refinement, her shining soprano glowing across the registers and unwaveringly precise. Lalla-Roukh’s ‘O nuit d’amour’ at the start of Act 2 was ravishing, and the joyful thrill of both the princess’s final aria and the- lovers’ closing duet was utterly winning.

OMM.de

Gabrielle Philiponet shines in the title role with a warm,
rounded soprano voice; her wonderfully powerful middle register serves to underscore the
intensity of her emotions. Also notable is a beautiful duet with her lady-in-waiting in the second act, "Loin du bruit, loin du monde," in which Mirza attempts to comfort her mistress; here, Niamh O'Sullivan’s rich mezzo-soprano and Philiponet’s full soprano blend to create a moment of moving intimacy
